Message of Pope Benedict XVI

In his message, Pope Benedict urged all people to look to 2012 with an “attitude of confident trust.” While he spoke of 2011’s world-wide economic crisis, and various declines in society and culture, he appealed to people to wait with expectation for the Lord. Pope Benedict then focused his talk upon the future, upon the hopeful youth. Reminding people of the enthusiasm of young people, he addressed parents, families, educators, leaders, and the media to listen to the youth and to communicate to them a positive value of life and a desire to be of service. The Holy Father said that the “Church looks to young people with hope and confidence; she encourages them to seek truth, to defend the common good, to be open to the world around them and willing to see ‘new things’ (Is. 42:9).” The message continued with encouragement and ideas on how to encourage the education of young people in true justice, peace, and truth. “Dear young people, you are a precious gift for society…The Church wishes to offer you the most precious gift she has: the opportunity to raise your eyes to God…”

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 25, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Here is a Vatican translation of Benedict XVI's Christmas message, which he gave today at noon from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, and before he imparted his traditional blessing "urbi et orbi" (to the city of Rome and the world).

Verbum caro factum est" – "The Word became flesh" (Jn 1:14).

Dear brothers and sisters listening to me here in Rome and throughout the world, I joyfully proclaim the message of Christmas: God became man; he came to dwell among us. God is not distant: he is "Emmanuel", God-with-us. He is no stranger: he has a face, the face of Jesus.

This message is ever new, ever surprising, for it surpasses even our most daring hope. First of all, because it is not merely a proclamation: it is an event, a happening, which credible witnesses saw, heard and touched in the person of Jesus of Nazareth! Being in his presence, observing his works and hearing his words, they recognized in Jesus the Messiah; and seeing him risen, after his crucifixion, they were certain that he was true man and true God, the only-begotten Son come from the Father, full of grace and truth (cf. Jn 1:14).

"The Word became flesh". Before this revelation we once more wonder: how can this be? The Word and the flesh are mutually opposed realities; how can the eternal and almighty Word become a frail and mortal man? There is only one answer: Love. Those who love desire to share with the beloved, they want to be one with the beloved, and Sacred Scripture shows us the great love story of God for his people which culminated in Jesus Christ.

Today is the second of the O Antiphons, O Adonai (O Almighty God). As Moses approached the burning bush, so we approach the divine Savior in the form of a child in the crib, or in the form of the consecrated host, and falling down we adore Him. "Put off the shoes from thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground . . . I am who am." "Come with an outstretched arm to redeem us." This is the cry of the Church for the second coming of Christ on the last day. The return of the Savior brings us plentiful redemption.

LET US PRAY

Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son was made known by the message of an Angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

"Rejoice! Pray unceasingly & be grateful"

"Rejoice: the Lord is near." As Christmas draws near, the Church emphasizes the joy which should be in our hearts over all that the birth of our Savior means for us. The great joy of Christians is to see the day drawing nigh when the Lord will come again in His glory to lead them into His kingdom. The oft-repeated Veni ("Come") of Advent is an echo not only of the prophets but also of the conclusion of the Apocalypse of St. John: "Come, Lord Jesus," the last words of the New Testament.

Today is known as Gaudete Sunday. The term Gaudete refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, "Rejoice". Rose vestments are worn to emphasize our joy that Christmas is near, and we also light the rose candle on our Advent wreath.

Prayer: O God, who see how your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord's Nativity, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Advent is the time for us to make this preparation by repenting of our sins, and renewing our lives through prayer, penance, and sharing our blessing with others. Alexander Pope wrote: “What does it profit me if Jesus is reborn in thousands of cribs all over the world and not reborn in our heart?” He means that Jesus must be reborn in our heart, during this season of Advent and everyday of our lives, sharing his kindness, love, mercy, forgiveness and spirit of humble service through our lives.
John the Baptist challenges our superficial attempts at change and demands that, while obeying the commandments faithfully, we must correct our relationships with others, mend ruptures and frictions,
face family responsibilities, work honestly, and treat employees justly. Let us follow John’s advice, let us celebrate the memory of Jesus first advent, prepare for Jesus new advent in our lives, and wait for his second advent at the end of the world. I promise you if you do that you will see Christ’s coming and celebrate it with mind and heart renewed at Christmas.

The season of Advent, the time of preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas and the start of the liturgical year in the Roman Catholic Church, begins on a different date each year.

Today the Church celebrates the First Sunday of Advent. This is the beginning of a new liturgical year. The Advent liturgy opens with that great yearning cry of the prophets of Israel to the Messiah and Redeemer whose advent they awaited. "Come!" God is not deaf to His people's cry. Fulfilling the promise of salvation made to our first parents at their fall He sent His Son into the world. And the application to all generations of mankind of the redemption that the Son of God made Man obtained for us by His passion continues until the end of time: it will conclude with the end of the world when the Messiah comes to complete His work and lead us into His kingdom. The history of the Church occupies the period between these two great events.

In the Mass of this Sunday the whole work of redemption is set before us, from its preparation in Israel's expectancy and its effect on our present lives down to its final fulfillment. The Church, in preparing us to celebrate at Christmas the birth of Him who came to snatch our souls from sin and transform them into the likeness of His own, invokes upon us and on all men the complete accomplishment of the mission of salvation that He came to perform upon this earth.

Founder of the Carmelite Missionaries

Francisco Palau, founder of the Carmelite Missionaries, was born in Aytona, Lerida, on 29 December 1811. Aware of his call to Teresian Carmel, he made his profession during the difficult moments of the religious life. His response was irrevocable.

I was not ignorant of the pressing danger to which I was exposing myself…nevertheless, I committed myself, through solemn vows, to a state of life whose rules I believe I could fulfil until death, independent of all human events and circumstances. By no means did I fear that the political revolts of society might become an obstacle to the fulfilment of my vows

WHO WAS HE?
He was born in Aytona, Lerida, Spain, on 29 December 1811; studied Philosophy and Theology at the Seminary of Lerida; professed as Discalced Carmelite on 15 November 1833. Because of political upheavals that racked Spain, he lived in exile to France from 1840 to 1851. He lived an intense solitary life in the vicinity of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Livron in 1843. In April 1851, he returned to Spain and was incardinated in the diocese of Barcelona, where he founded the “School of Virtues”, in November of the same year. The School was suppressed and he was confined to Ibiza on 9 April 1854, where he lived deeply the mystery of the Church. He founded the Congregation of the Carmelite brothers and sisters on the islands of Baleares. From January to March 1872, he wrote and published the Rules and Constitutions of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelite, which was printed in Barcelona. He died in Tarragona on 20 March 1872.

We were born in the bosom of a family of mystics: “The Carmel of Saint Teresa and St. John of the Cross”.

The Teresian Carmelite family or Discalced Carmelite is the reformed Order of Carmel, which had its origins in the crusades. They lived as hermits at Mount Carmel in Palestine, in the early thirteenth century.

Teresian Carmel was born in the sixteenth century, as fruit of the spiritual and creative impulse of a singular woman: Saint Teresa of Jesus and of her providential encounter with another exceptional man: Saint John of the Cross.

Moved by the strength of the Spirit and the dynamism of His mystical graces, Teresa founded in 1562, in Avila, the first convent of the reformed Carmel, whose spirituality would be fervently propagated. Her goal was to organize small contemplative communities, dedicated to prayer for the Church and its needs.

Following the inspiration of Saint Teresa, Saint John founded in 1568 the first reformed male convent of Carmel. Even at the start, and to the delight of Saint Teresa, the friars did not content themselves to only becoming contemplatives, centred on the life of prayer, but the zeal for the apostolate was born too, leading them to become ardent missionaries, and ultimately, faithful servants of the Church and the world.

Carmel is heir to the exceptional spiritual riches bequeathed in the life and books of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Saint John of the Cross, Elizabeth of the Trinity, Edith Stein, and Blessed Francisco Palau, among others.

HEEDING THE CALL

“You did not choose me, but I chose you,” Jesus said (Jn 15:16).

In a vocation, it is God who calls. And those who are called are expected to respond, thereby finding the greatest peace, happiness and joy one can have in this world. The Lord has called each of us; each is called by name. A call implies that we hear a voice from within ourselves, beckoning us to listen and respond. How will you answer God’s call in your life? It’s a call that demands much from you (God’s call is asking for nothing less than everything you have), but it is a call that offers His presence in your life. Will you answer His call?

Eleven young ladies dared to join the Regional Vocation Discernment Workshop held at Carmelite Missionaries Center of Life, Dueñas, Iloilo last October 14-18, 2011. Although they have little idea or are clueless at all in regards to what will happen in the next five days of discernment, they opened themselves and let the Lord speak to them. They have fears, doubts and confusions yet they also have the willingness to follow where God really wants them to be. Their deepest desire was to discover the state to which they have been called and are eager to cooperate with God’s grace and heed His call.

Each day has a theme that helped the participants to be attuned to the inner voice within them and to develop their intimate relationships with God day by day. The sharing of the sisters in the different topics motivated them to know themselves better and their deepest desires as well as God’s desires for them. Inspiring homilies and unique vocation stories of the priests encouraged them to follow Jesus with the assurance that He already went ahead of them and all they have to do is simply to “follow.” So, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Prayer was also given emphasis as the most important thing in discerning one’s vocation.

Mission tour to our different communities and apostolates in Iloilo gave them a glimpse of what kind of life the Carmelite Missionaries have. Every participant commented on the warm welcome they received in all the communities that we had visited. It gave them an atmosphere of “home’ and a feeling of belongingness. The witnessing of the CM sisters left them a great impact on how we live our own vocations as daughters of Blessed Francisco Palau. Indeed, the sisters are striving to live out our charism, that is, COMMUNION.”

On the last day of the Discernment Workshop, six (6) of them were accepted as lived-out aspirants: Jovelyn Kito (La Trinidad, Benguet), Marilou Sabalo (Maasin, Leyte), Vanessa Bancolo (Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental), Irene Mae Vocales (Arevalo, Iloilo City), Sue Angela Telarma (Anilao, Iloilo), and Winy Rose Pabila (Banate, Iloilo). Yes, the seed of vocation comes from God, but it requires one’s response to water and nourish it so that it can grow. May the Lord give them the faith and courage to follow and they will surely be filled with joy when they are in the middle of God’s will and plan. The wonderful thing, though, is that while God expects great things from us, He will perform great things in us. Simply because, it is God who chose you…

Some Reflections...

A Way of Being

Contemplation begins with desire – not our desire for God, but his desire for us. The first and greatest commandment may be to love God with every fibre of our being, but there is something still more fundamental: the realisation that we are loved first. Every contemplative makes this discovery, and in fact bases his/her life on it: that our God is a pursuing God. The whole Carmelite tradition is clear: our desire for God is first awakened by his desire for us. This is the message of our great saints and mystics. The Dark Night and The Spiritual Canticle of John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila’s Interior Castle – together with every other spiritual classic – celebrate this divine pursuit: the Lover and the beloved seeking each other in the light and the darkness of love’s turbulent ways.The hungers of the heart and the longings of the spirit are the result of God first desiring us and coming to us in love. This is what Iain Matthew, one of our most popular Carmelite writers, calls ‘the impact of God’: a God who is not a bystander waiting for us to find him but a restless God seeking to make space for himself in our lives. The challenge, of course, for all of us, is to let ourselves be loved, as the young French Carmelite, Elizabeth of the Trinity has said, and allow the reality of this love to change our hearts. It often comes as a surprise that Carmelite writers speak so little about ways and methods of prayer. Instead, they go straight to the heart of what prayer is all about: exposure to this selfsurrendering God. Their concern does not consist in the knowledge that we are saved, but in the assurance that we are loved. For them, the focus is clear and what they seek most of all is to awaken the heart to the presence within. ‘No matter how much you think you are searching for God’, John of the Cross reminds us, ‘he is searching for you much more.’ (By: Eugene McCaffrey, OCD)
